McKinney-Vento

The Oregon School District Homeless Liaison works with school staff and local agencies to identify students who may qualify for homeless status (according to the McKinney-Vento Act) and, once identified, work to remove barriers these students may have in accessing their education.

If know of, or are, a student currently experiencing unstable or transitioning housing, please complete the attached form linked here.

 

Who Qualifies:

Anyone lacking a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residents including:

  • Doubled up, sharing housing due to loss of housing or economic hardship

  • In a motel, trailer park or campground

  • In an emergency shelter or transitional housing

  • Living in cars, parks, public spaces

  • Not in the custody of a parent or guardian

  • Migratory student 

Rights:

  • Go to school, no matter where they live or how long they have lived there

  • Continue in the school that they last attended before becoming homeless

  • Receive transportation to the school they last attended

  • Enroll in school without giving a permanent address

  • Enroll & attend classes while the school arrange for the transfer of immunization records or any other documents required for enrollment

**  These rights are established under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, Title X, Part C of the No Child Left Behind Act

Service to homeless students includes:

  • Enrollment assistance

  • Transportation to/from school, if feasible

  • Receive free or reduced meals

  • Community resource referrals
